Hemp University Canna-Cation 2025 II: THCA Flower Vs. THC Flower: Simple Breakdown
THCA Flower Vs. THC Flower
When it comes to cannabis, there is a lot of confusion surrounding the differences between THC flower and THCA flower. While there is a major difference from a legal perspective, in layman’s terms they are essentially the same and produce the same effects. For cannabis users in Texas and the South who are looking for a legal option, THCA flower is the way to go as it is legal in Texas and most Southern states. For cannabis users looking for a legal but more potent and elevated experience, products like Snowballs and Moonrocks (THCA Flower coated in kief) are taking the cannabis world by storm.
In this blog, we’ll break down the simple yet consequential differences between THC flower and THCA flower.
What is THC Flower?
THC flower refers to the cannabis buds that are harvested from the cannabis plant and contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound responsible for the “high” that users experience when consuming cannabis. THC is activated when the cannabis is heated, either through smoking, vaping, or cooking, which converts THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) into THC. THC is simply THCA in its ‘natural and unheated’ state.
- THC Flower THC Content: THC Flower contains a moderate-to-low amount of THC, usually ranging from 15-25% depending on the strain. The potency of THC flower can vary, with some strains containing higher levels of THC, while others have more moderate concentrations. THC Flower rolled in kief like, THCA Moonrocks & Snowballz, will yield much higher THC concentrations (>70%), providing a significantly more potent product.
- Effects of THC: When consumed, THC provides the user with a euphoric, uplifting high. It’s well-known for its ability to relax the mind and body, relieve pain, reduce anxiety, and induce appetite. However, the potency of regular THC flower can vary based on the strain and growing conditions.
- Legality of THC: THC Flower is cannabis/marijuana and is illegal in states that do not allow for recreational marijuana use. THC Fower is illegal in Texas and the South.
THC flower offers a satisfying high for many users, and its effects may be less intense or shorter-lasting compared to products with higher concentrations of THC, like Snowballs and Moonrocks (Kief coated THC flower), dabs, wax, etc, providing for a more controlled experience.
What is THCA Flower?
Now that we've covered THC flower, let's move on to THCA flower. THCA is the precursor to THC and is found in raw, unheated cannabis. THCA is a non-psychoactive compound in its raw form. However, when cannabis is decarboxylated (heated), THCA is converted into THC, which is why THCA flower must be heated before it produces the desired effects (duh lol!).
- THCA Flower THC Content: THCA flower is typically cannabis that has not been heated and still contains a moderate-to-low amount of THCA, often in the range of 20-30%. The flower looks and smells like regular cannabis, but without heating, it doesn’t produce the psychoactive effects of THC.
- Effects of THCA: When consumed, THC provides the user with a euphoric, uplifting high. It’s well-known for its ability to relax the mind and body, relieve pain, reduce anxiety, and induce appetite. However, the potency of regular THCA flower can vary based on the strain and growing conditions (just like THC flower).
- Legality of THCA Flower: THCA Flower is cannabis/hemp and is legal in states that do not allow for recreational marijuana use.
Bottom line, THCA & THC Flower are the same. THCA becomes THC when heated, but is unaltered in its ‘natural state,’ allowing the user to determine when they would like the heat the product to consume the psychoactive elements of it. THCA is fully legal in Texas and can be purchased on THC Eazy!
